The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued an advisory urging individuals to take precautions when hosting gatherings with family and friends this weekend, as the flu season is reaching its peak.

(CBSLA) – LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – With the holiday weekend coming in the midst of the continuing epidemic, health professionals advise people to be alert and flexible if their plans need to alter due to COVID-19.

Coach Evan Yabu of Thousand Oaks High School, who is now on a 10-day quarantine after being in close contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus last week, heeded that instruction.

Coach Evan Yabu of Thousand Oaks High School is watching his squad via drone while in quarantine due to a COVID-19 exposure. The date is September 2, 2021.

Coach Yabu has been watching his squad train on the field using a drone launched from a neighboring neighborhood.

“They think it’s amusing. I’ll zoom past and get up close to a few of them on occasion, and they’ll all wave and leap. They want to be in front of the camera,” Yabu said.

In some ways, the distance, according to the high school coach, has been beneficial.

“I can practically fly from one cluster to another, over the stands, and into the backfield to observe what’s going on. It makes me feel like I was a better observer on the drone this week than I am in person,” he said.

The drone, Yabu said, is just another pivot he, like so many other coaches and instructors, has had to make throughout the epidemic.

“When it comes to the past year, adaptability has certainly been the name of the game,” the coach added.

Officials are worried about the spread of coronavirus as we approach the big holiday weekend, which is often the final hurrah of the summer.

Dr. Daisy Dodd, a Kaiser Permanente Infectious Disease Specialist, said, “Yes, we’re extremely worried.” “Whenever you host a gathering… Let’s face it, we’ve been dealing with this for quite some time. We also want to have a good time. We want to spend time with our family and friends, but we must be cautious.”

Non-vaccinated persons should remain at home over Labor Day Weekend, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and even vaccinated people should consider about where they gather together, according to Dr. Dodd.

Report from the Los Angeles County Public Health Department for Thursday, September 1, 2021.

“Having a meeting outdoors, in the backyard, in the open, reduces the virus’s ability to spread from person to person,” Dr. Dodd added.

Although the newest LA County statistics show a 16 percent week-to-week drop in cases and an 11 percent drop in fatalities, Public Health Director Dr. Barbara Ferrer’s office is not forecasting a plateau. In fact, they’re bracing for another spike in the coming weeks thanks to the Delta version.

“We are seeing reduced transmission overall,” Dr. Ferrer said, “but since the Delta variation is so capable of infecting a large number of individuals, we are still seeing extremely high numbers of people being infected.”

According to the most recent statistics, 65 percent of LA County citizens aged 12 and above are completely vaccinated.

With the holiday weekend approaching, health officials are urging people to be cautious when gathering with family and friends. Hawaii has implemented a 30 day lockdown in order to prevent the spread of any infectious diseases. Reference: hawaii 30 day lockdown.
