Just in time for Halloween, Screen Media has announced that an expanded version of its genre documentary Cleanin’ Up the Town: Remembering Ghostbusters will be released. With behind-the-scenes video and 46 interviews with cast and crew, the documentary takes us back to the creation of the classic. It also includes never-before-seen archival material. The cast and crew open up about their experience working on one of our all-time favorites, reminiscing about how wonderful and crazy it was.
We see Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver, as well as Annie Potts, David Margulies, William Atherton, Kurt Fuller, and Jason Reitman, as well as Director Ivan Reitman, Producer Michael C. Gross, Visual Effects crew Richard Edlund, Terry Windell, Dennis Muren, and Steve Johnson, as well as musicians Ray Parker Jr and The Bus Boys, among the interviews and stories told. They talk about our tasty Stay Puft marshmallow guy! Anthony Bueno, who also worked on Too Hot to Handle: Remembering Ghostbusters II, directed it.

Ghostbusters is a cult favorite directed by Ivan Reitman and co-written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. It recounts the story of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, and Egon Spengler, who work at Columbia University and conduct unethical experiments on their pupils. They decide to start their own company as Ghostbusters after being thrown out of university. They move into an old firehouse as their new home. They sup up and deck up their hearse, then go to work on relieving New York City of its supernatural woes for a fee. They’re arrested after making national news and being accused for the demonic disturbances, only to be freed when the mayor takes a risk on them to help rescue the city.
Unbeknownst to everyone, a long-dead Gozer worshiper (Ivo Shandor) built a downtown apartment complex that is the source of all the strange happenings. They discover that the structure has the potential to revive the ancient Hittite deity Gozer and wipe mankind off the face of the earth. Who are you going to contact to put a stop to this horrible world-ending threat? You already have the solution.
This documentary shows how the filmmakers overcame time limitations and a slew of technical difficulties to create the film that forever altered the cinema business. Aykroyd’s screenplay initially had Ghostbusters set in the future and relied heavily on science fiction, with several scenes taking place in outer space, among other nuggets and facts revealed. The initial storyline, according to Harold Ramis, was about “a hole ripped in our reality envelope.”
“I told to him, ‘Dan, there’s a wonderful concept here, but I really believe it should take place today,” Reitman recalled of persuading him to hold it in New York. Reitman goes on, “It should take place in a genuine metropolis on the planet, such as New York. All of this wonderful things will be considerably more stunning when compared to the reality we were familiar with.” The part of Louis Tully was supposed to be played by John Candy, but it was ultimately given to fellow Canadian great Rick Moranis. I’m not going to tell you everything. On October 1, it will be released in select cinemas and on VOD platforms.
